2008 Graduates
If you are a 2008 graduate you are joining 305,000 other graduates in the job hunting process. This may be a daunting prospect but there are a huge variety of graduate jobs available
The Association of Graduate Recruiters’ Summer Review stated that graduate recruitment has undergone a year-on-year increase of 11.7%. Although this is slightly down on 2007’s figure of 12.7%, and less than the AGR’s prediction in the 2008 Winter Review, which predicted growth of 16.4%, most importantly graduate vacancies are still increasing.
So here is our advise for job seekers:-
If you are reading this and are a 2008 graduate then you have probably missed the opportunity to get a place on a graduate training scheme (typically these begin in September and this page is being written in August)! Most graduate training schemes for 2008 will have passed the application deadline date but are likely to re-open in Autumn 2008 for start dates in 2009.
The majority of 2008 graduates will not join structured “graduate training schemes” and are likely instead to find graduate roles once they have finished University. Graduate employers typically look for experience within a relevant discipline or a personality that will fit well into the role.
“Experience” can take the form of work experience (according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters 80.5% have stated that industrial placements or internships are ‘very effective’ at developing soft skills). Alternatively graduates may find that their degree contained modules that directly relate to a position (especially in the case of Science and Technical graduates).
It is therefore likely that many 2008 graduates will develop relevant skills and experiences before finding an ideal "graduate job". It may be 2009 before graduates' have obtained the right level of experience and found the right role.

We can therefore suggest graduate opportunities to candidates but do expect the candidate to have gained an awareness of the sort of roles that would interest them (and ideally a limited amount of relevant experience).
