Chemical Engineering Jobs
Chemical engineering incorporates both an element of chemistry and mechanical engineering. It is the design, construction, and operation of machines and power plants that produce products such as acids, dyes, drugs, plastics, and synthetic rubber, by adapting the laboratory chemistry to larger-scale mass production. Chemical engineering converts raw materials or chemicals into more useful forms. Therefore, chemical engineers are the personnel involved in this process.
How to become a Chemical Engineer...
To become a chemical engineer, it is imperative you are qualified within this discipline. Ideally you should obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (BEng). Many engineers go on to complete a master’s degree in higher-level chemical engineering, or a more specific chemical engineering discipline, such as Process Safety and Loss Prevention.
It would be most beneficial to recent chemical engineering graduates to have completed a year-in-industry work placement within industry as part of their course. Or at least completed summer work in a relevant industry. The competition for chemical engineering jobs is fierce, so you need to have that edge over other recent graduates.
Many Chemical Engineers aim to develop their career in such a way as to become chartered. You would need begin this process by becoming a member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Whether Chartered or not, member of this professional body would help your application for chemical engineering vacancies, and it would give you access to chemical engineering jobs. Professional bodies are there to support Chartership routes.
Disciplines covered in Chemical Engineering...
Chemical engineering is a combination of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering, so covers a wide variety of disciplines and industries. Many chemical engineers go on to specialise in a particular area later on in their career.
Skills and experiences in chemical engineering include: - Process Safety and Loss Prevention - Health and Safety Engineering - Engineering in Oil and Gas, Nuclear, Coal, Renewable Energy industries. - Offshore and onshore positions - Acids, dyes, drugs, plastics, and synthetic rubber
What we are looking for...
- Graduates of Chemical Engineering degrees - BEng and MEng - Chemical engineers who have worked in any of the disciplines mentioned above, whether recent graduates or experienced chemical engineers, such as Process Safety and Loss Prevention Engineering - Members of IChemE, and Charted Chemical Engineers
