Environmental Consultancy
Within the environmental industry, a major part of this is accounted for by consultancies, whom are primarily engaged in providing advice and assistance to businesses and other organizations on environmental issues. They identify problems i.e. monitoring and surveying, then measure and evaluate risks, and recommend solutions.
They employ a multidiscipline staff of scientists, engineers, and other technicians with expertise in areas, such as air and water quality, asbestos contamination, remediation, and environmental law. Some consultancies also provide sanitation or site remediation consulting services, following the initial stages of the consultancy process.
How to become an Environmental Consultant...
Consultancy within the environmental industry not only requires a strong background of knowledge in a wide range of disciplines, but also the skills to communicate and work effectively with clients and organisations.
For anyone wanting to develop their career as an environmental consultant, you would need to first gain the relevant qualifications, e.g. a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or similar. Further postgraduate qualifications in a more specialist area, would also support your career, such as master’s degrees in contaminated land, or noise and vibration. The next stage would be to obtain as much experience as possible (preferably gained over the Summer months of study, as a work placement through the course, or part-time during your studies). As with most careers and jobs, the more experience you have, the better chance you have of getting a position within a consultancy.
