Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Water Engineering and River Modelling Jobs

Hydrology is the study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water. A hydrologist, works within the fields of either earth or environmental science, physical geography or civil and environmental engineering.

There are a number of sub-domains of hydrology, and include hydrometeorology, surface hydrology, hydrogeology, drainage basin management, water engineering, river modelling and water quality.

Hydrological research provides insight for environmental engineering, policy and planning. It plays a big part in the ever-increasing factor of Flood Risk Management, particularly as climate change is becoming more and more evident in our weather.

How to become a Hydrologist, Hydrogeologist, Water Engineer or River Modeller...

You would need to be qualified within this discipline, beginning at University studying a more general subject, such as Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or Geography. Ideally you should obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (BSc). As part of this course, you would complete a final project to gain your ‘honours’, and if you are sure you want to progress into hydrology, or similar, then you would focus your project on this subject. Many graduates would then continue to complete a master’s degree and in many cases, a PhD in a higher-level, and more specialist subject, such as water management, hydrology, or hydrogeology.

It would be most beneficial to recent graduates to have completed a year-in-industry work placement within industry as part of their course. Or at least completed summer work in a relevant industry. The competition for such engineering jobs is fierce, so you need to have that edge over other recent graduates.

Many environmental specialists aim to develop their career in such a way as to become chartered. You would begin this process by becoming a member of one or more of the many professional bodies for within the environmental industry. For example, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), or the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). Whether Chartered or not, membership of a professional body would help your application for vacancies. Professional bodies are there to support Chartership routes.

What we are looking for...

- Graduates of Environmental-based, or Water Engineering-based degrees - BSc and MSc.
- Hydrologist, Hydrogeologists, Water Engineers, River Modellers, or other environmental experience, whether recent graduates or experienced consultants.
- Members of CIWEM, CEH, or IES, whether Chartered or not.
