Graduates enter recruitment every year in numerous different sectors. Recruitment is a natural environment for charismatic, results driven graduates with excellent social skills.
Typically recruitment consultants have backgrounds that are similar to the candidates that they are recruiting. It is logical that bright, ambitious graduates make strong consultants and are particularly suited to working with ambitious candidates. As a result the majority of Finance, Legal, IT and Commercial recruiters are graduates. Blue collar, secretarial and other industries that are less likely to demand degrees are also less likely to be serviced by recruitment consultants in possession of a degree.
To be successful in a professional role you will need skills that are likely to have been developed at University. You will need to absorb information and determine what is relevant. The most succesful University graduates finish their course with a great set of friends, as well as a good degree and these "networking" skills are essential in recruitment. Successful recruiters are popular recruiters, with candidates and clients both giving them repeat business.
Graduates should be aware that recruitment requires strong sales skills and a great work ethic. It is a target driven environment with a big earning potential. Normally graduates begin their recruitment career by calling companies and building their own desk. In this way it is much like starting a small business, but with support, training and guidance from those around them. Once you have a regular client base and candidates keen to work with you in future you can develop into an Experienced Recruitment Consultant and progress to lead teams and inspire other consultants.
