Graduate Jobs in Web Design and Web Development

It is very rare, if not unheard of, in our modern times for a business, charity, or any sizeable entity worth acknowledging not to have a web site.

Web development and design jobs are numerous and varied, with options of employment available in every industry at all levels. Web development and design roles can differ in responsibilities, as some companies will combine the two disciplines, whilst larger companies will often separate them. A Developer will be responsible for coding, and basically creating the elements that a viewer will not see, whilst the Design role will create all aspects that a visitor to the site will see.

How to become a Web Developer & Designer

As previously mentioned, any company or entity that has a website, must at some point have employed a web developer and/or designer. Candidates can follow several routes into this profession due to the nature of the work. For example, a general Computer Science degree will cover general web areas such a Java, SQL, ActionScript and potentially Flash, although someone wanting to specialise in Web Design may choose to select a more specialist degree such as Multimedia Design, which focus on more specific areas of design.

Characteristics of this career path can vary, as Developers are preferred to have good maths and programming backgrounds, whereas Designers are desired to be more artistic with potentially Art College or associated backgrounds prior to University study.

With this career path, proven examples are as important, if not more so, than achieved academic grades. Which means employers will want to see past examples of your work, whether through University, personal projects, or any work experience. As such, creating an online portfolio to show case your work is strongly recommended.
