Graduate IT Testing Recruitment

Testers are employed to check the work created by the designers and developers, to establish if any errors have been made, or could occur.

Candidates are employed by many companies, from a variety of backgrounds. These areas will especially incorporate software houses and computer game producers. Due to the amount of programming involved in these fields, and especially the user interaction element, it is important that all software is appropriately tested before release to the public.
Candidates will be responsible for running tests, creating test plans, writing reports, and liasing with developers to fix faults. Experience within Software development or game design is a frequent requirement for most Software Testing positions.

How to move into Testing

Testing is a field that requires candidates to have a keen eye for detail, and patience to find errors. Candidates must also have excellent writing skills, as reports are a daily task.
Candidates are preferred to be of graduate calibre, as an understanding of programming, as well as a keen eye for finding errors in required. Degrees are required to be of an IT orientation or though no specific degree is usually required.
Companies may not always advertise for Testing positions, as these opportunities are normally required all year around, especially in the computer games industry.
Salaries can vary, as testing positions are more often than not contract based.
Disciplines within Testing

Tester responsibilities are quite straightforward in IT terms, i.e. search for errors, find errors, and report back. As such, job titles are usually straight forward, and a few examples are listed below: -


Software Tester – Typically employed by software houses to highlight errors in programs. These can then be debugged by Software Developers.

Game Tester – Gaming companies require every aspect of their products to be extensively tested – an ideal job for most computer gaming enthusiasts! Candidates with knowledge of a foreign language are especially sought after in such roles as they an assess the quality of games that are marketed overseas.

Fault Finder – A wide range of companies require fault finders. SMEs frequently require analysis and fault finding on products that they are developing. Lager employers, such as the NHS, employ large numbers of fault finders to assist with large and complex projects.
